Orelle belongs to the 3 Vallées ski area, but it is not in the Tarentaise: it is a commune of the Maurienne. Its membership of the ski area is a skiing fact, not a road fact — and it is the most common booking mistake on this destination.

A Maurienne village, not a high-altitude resort

The village is made up of ten traditional hamlets tiered across the mountainside, between 880 and 1,200 metres according to the ski area’s own body. You do not reach it by climbing the valley that leads to Courchevel, Méribel or the Belleville resorts: the road follows the A43 through the Maurienne valley, leaves at exit 29 “Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne”, then takes the D1006 to Francoz.

The gondola, and what it implies

From the village centre, the Orelle and then Orelle-Caron gondolas reach the Cime Caron (3,195 m) in around twenty minutes: that is what links Orelle to the largest ski area in the world. At Francoz the resort has public car parks — 350 outdoor spaces and 743 covered spaces according to the tourist office — and a seasonal shuttle links Saint-Michel — Valloire station to the gondola.

What it changes if your party is split

If you are staying in Orelle while the rest of your party is in Val Thorens, you share a ski area but not a road. Two separate transfers are then needed, and driving from one to the other is not a matter of minutes. We would rather say so at booking than discover it with you.

Winter and arrival

Winter equipment is required in Savoie from 1 November to 31 March. The French traffic authority rates February Saturdays red in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with heavy traffic announced on the A43 — this journey’s backbone. Drop-off is adapted to your hamlet and exact address, and confirmed by our operations team.

Which gateway you can book from

Orelle can be booked from Geneva, through the Maurienne.
