Tignes is a commune of the Haute-Tarentaise organised into five villages spread across 550 m of vertical: Les Brévières (1,550 m) and Les Boisses (1,850 m) lower down, then Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet and Val Claret at around 2,100 m. No single altitude sums it up; it is your arrival village that shapes the journey.

The dam decides the road

Tignes is reached by the D902, the Val d’Isère road from Bourg-Saint-Maurice — some thirty kilometres. Les Brévières and Les Boisses are reached from that road, before the Chevril dam. For Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet and Val Claret, the D87 leaves the D902, crosses the dam and climbs above the lake. The lake itself is a reservoir: the Tignes dam, filled in 1952, drowned the old village — which is why the modern resort is perched where it is.

That is why we ask for the full address at booking, village included. A chalet at Les Brévières and an apartment at Val Claret are reached neither by the same turning nor in the same time.

What winter and Saturday change

Savoie requires winter equipment from 1 November to 31 March. The French traffic authority (Bison Futé) rates February Saturdays red in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with official advice to avoid the RN90 between Albertville and Moûtiers from 9am to 7pm — and the RN90 carries on to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, where the D902 takes over. On a Saturday the whole Tarentaise changes over in a single day: we set the pick-up against your flight, then adjust it on the day.

Luggage, skis and the vehicle

Tignes draws parties who come to ski early and late in the season, often heavily equipped. Volume decides the vehicle as much as headcount: tell us what you are bringing.

Which gateway you can book from

Tignes can currently be booked from Geneva; the nearest station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The route page alongside publishes its indicative distance and journey time, measured to the commune’s public reference point — its town hall, at Tignes le Lac — never to your accommodation. Val d’Isère, across the dam, shares the same linked ski area and the same road up from the valley.
