Of everywhere we serve from Lyon, Val Thorens sits furthest up the valley: the resort closes the Belleville valley, reached after Saint-Martin and after Les Menuires. The road does not continue past it.
Time spent inside the airport counts too
On a long run, it is not only the road that decides when you arrive: it is also the time between landing and stepping into the vehicle. Lyon-Saint-Exupéry has two passenger terminals according to its operator, and reclaiming bags from a full flight there is not instant; a large party with ski equipment takes longer to assemble.
We factor that in when setting the time. A chauffeur waiting for you is the rule, but a schedule built on an unrealistic clearing time helps nobody: that is how an arrival planned for late afternoon becomes a night arrival without anyone deciding it.
Arriving at Val Thorens after dark
That is not a problem in itself, provided you are ready for it. The road is generally quieter; what changes is what has closed in the resort. Val Thorens manages traffic and parking within the resort strictly. So the question is not only where you are staying, but how close a vehicle can bring you. That is prepared from your full address, not at the barrier.
What the figures on this page are worth
The distance and journey time shown are measured on the public road network, from the Terminal 1 drop-off area at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry to the resort’s public reference point — its tourist office — never to your accommodation. The time is free-flowing driving, excluding winter conditions: it places the journey, it does not commit it. Traffic, weather, changeover Saturday and your final address all move it — your flight sets the departure time. On this arrival in particular, variability is higher than elsewhere: the resort sits at the head of the valley and at altitude.
