Val d’Isère is not in the 3 Vallées, and that is the first thing this transfer changes. The commune sits at the head of the Haute-Tarentaise, the upper valley of the Isère: from Geneva the road runs through Albertville and Moûtiers just as it does for Courchevel or Méribel, but it does not turn off there — it carries on to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then climbs again, alone, for some thirty kilometres of mountain road. That final stretch is what makes this journey particular, not its length.

The end of the road

Beyond the village, the D902 crosses the Col de l’Iseran towards the Maurienne — in summer only. In winter the pass is closed, generally from early November to early June depending on snow: Val d’Isère is then a dead end, with no through traffic. You arrive there; you do not pass through. For a transfer that means something concrete: everything that goes up on a Saturday comes back down the same road, and the timing is prepared with that reality rather than against it.

The village itself stands at 1,850 m and stretches along the road for several kilometres: La Daille at the entrance, the centre and its quarters — Le Crêt, Le Joseray, Le Châtelard — then Le Laisinant and Le Fornet at the foot of the pass. An address at La Daille and an address at Le Fornet are not reached at the same moment, nor in the same way.

The time is free-flowing driving, excluding winter conditions: a basis for planning, not a promise. The tourist office itself quotes “3 hours by car” from Geneva and advises shifting your arrival on holiday Saturdays — which we prepare for rather than suffer: on the day, your flight sets the departure time.

Tignes, on the same road

Val d’Isère and Tignes form a single linked ski area — the former Espace Killy, now “Tignes – Val d’Isère”. Both resorts are reached by the same D902 from Bourg-Saint-Maurice; they part at the Chevril dam.
