Choosing your airport for Les 3 Vallées

Every gateway to Les 3 Vallées ends on the same road: the RN90 to Moûtiers, then the climb into your valley. What differs between airports is everything before that point — the choice of flights, the length of motorway, the exposure to weather and to Saturday traffic. There is no best airport in the abstract; there is a best airport for your flight, your schedule and your party.

Geneva: the widest choice of flights

Geneva concentrates the largest choice of airlines and frequencies into the Alps — Courchevel’s own tourist office says as much when it recommends it. The trade-off is one of the longer road journeys of the four gateways, plus a border crossing which, on the busiest Saturdays, can add its own queue. It is the natural choice for an international flight or flexible timings: you gain flight freedom and accept some road.

Lyon: the major French hub

Lyon-Saint-Exupéry is a full-scale alternative: a major hub, entirely on the French side — no border — and one asset the others lack, its own TGV station inside the airport. For a party whose flights land scattered across the day, or to combine one arrival by air and another by rail at a single meeting point, it is the most flexible gateway. Road distance to the resorts is of the same order as from Geneva.

Chambéry: the closest gateway

Chambéry is the closest airport to the valleys — Courchevel’s tourist office puts it at 95 km, where the other gateways count far more. A short journey absorbs a mishap less well, but it also creates fewer of them: less motorway, less traffic exposure. The limit lies elsewhere: a small, strongly seasonal flight schedule concentrated on winter Saturdays — and a modest airfield more sensitive to weather than a large hub. When your flight lands there, it is the most direct door; the question is whether a flight goes there at all.

Grenoble: the winter-holiday airport

Grenoble-Alpes-Isère lives to the rhythm of winter holiday flights, notably from the UK. Courchevel’s tourist office places it at 125 km — between Chambéry and the two big hubs. The logic mirrors Chambéry: an excellent gateway when your flight lands there, a limited schedule otherwise. One honest caveat: the airport stands alone on the plain, with no town or railway station attached — a badly delayed flight leaves you fewer fallback options than at Lyon or Geneva.

The train: arriving at Moûtiers, at the foot of the valleys

The fifth gateway is not an airport. Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains station sits at the foot of all three valleys — 18 km from Méribel, 20 from Saint-Martin, 27 from Les Menuires — and the train imposes no baggage allowance and no long walk out of an arrivals hall: you step onto a platform and the car is waiting. For travellers whose departure city has a good high-speed rail link to Moûtiers, it is often the calmest journey — the last leg is short, even if it concentrates the mountain constraints.
