Arriving after dark at an Alpine ski resort

A late arrival is not a spoiled arrival. What changes after dark is not the road — it is everything around it that has closed.

A great many flights into the Alps land in the evening, and the idea that a night arrival is best avoided owes more to bad experiences in shared transport than to the journey itself. Handled properly, arriving late even has an advantage: the valley is considerably quieter than it is in the middle of the day.

What actually changes after dark is not the road. It is everything around it that, by that hour, has closed.

The four things that close before you get there

  • Your accommodation’s reception. This is the most common friction point by far. A rental agency, a concierge or a hotel desk keeps hours; after those, you need a key handover agreed in advance. That is settled with your host before you travel, not on arrival.
  • The shops. Arriving late often means arriving without having eaten, in a resort where the grocery has shut. It cannot be fixed once you are there.
  • The lifts. Some resorts are not reached by road alone; where the final leg depends on a gondola, its operating hours govern your arrival far more than ours do.
  • Resort services. Ski hire, lift passes, resort shuttles: what is open by day is not necessarily open in the evening.

What does not change

Your chauffeur. The vehicle is reserved for your party, the pick-up is set by your actual landing time, and a delay moves the journey without negotiation. Night is precisely when the difference from shared transport is starkest: there is no waiting for a vehicle to fill, no drop-off tour, and nobody leaves without you because the last departure was at a certain hour.

What to arrange before you travel

  • The key handover. Agreed with your host, with someone reachable in the evening.
  • The full address. After dark, a property name without an address costs time. Some resort addresses also carry an access constraint that is better known in advance.
  • Dinner. If you land after the shops close, plan it beforehand or ask your host.
  • Children. Seats and boosters are requested at booking with the child’s age: they occupy a place and are prepared in advance.

Should you take a morning flight instead?

Not necessarily. A well-organised evening flight beats a morning one that forces an extra hotel night and a four o’clock start. What matters is that the arrival is prepared: key, address, dinner — and a transfer waiting for you whatever time you actually land.

Send us your flight and your address. We will handle the rest, late included.

Frequently asked questions

Do you operate transfers at night?

Send us your flight: the pick-up is set by your actual landing time, whatever the hour. The vehicle is reserved for your party and a delay moves it without negotiation.

What if my accommodation is closed when I arrive?

That is the most common friction point of a late arrival, and it is settled with your host before you travel: an agreed key handover and someone reachable in the evening.

Is arriving at night riskier?

The road is generally quieter than in the middle of the day. What changes is the resort’s services — reception, shops, lifts — which have closed.

Is a morning flight better?

Not necessarily. A prepared evening flight often beats a morning one that forces an extra hotel night and a very early start.
